Thanks for the "tech-tonic shift" series. All three problems are immensely important. For usage scalability, you mention two very important facilitating factors (1) We need a only couple of good platforms like Windows,Mac,Linux for PCs. iPhone, Android and may be WinMo/Symbian. But how to convince others to give up ? (2) This is absolutely must - powerful browsers for billions of low-end handsets. And I would add (3) Localized content - because English is not the primary language of most of these billion users.

We also need a shift in funding strategy: instead of a $100M iFund for a bunch of companies, a $1M in.iFund for a bunch of companies can do better. You can call it micro-VC-ing because for the Indian example, most of the 300M users don't use data services due to the 3 reasons cited above. And there aren't REALLY appealing apps being developed/caught on due to multitude of platforms issue AND very importantly the crooked deployment mechanism provided by the carriers. But iPhone, despite of its high cost, has revolutionalized mobile landscape. An example of that is the launch of O2 Litmus dev platform.

I am all tuned up for your next post on revenue scalability, because that is what "business" is all about :)

I agree with you that there's a huge opportunity of creating mobile services for people in developing countries.

As an entrepreneur in Brazil, we have a few services that already have a relevant traffic (+3mi mobile pageviews/month), and the iPhone only comes in the 20th position among the most acessed devices.

What we see is that the mobile browsers are getting better, and it's becoming a viable option to prioritize mobile sites to deliver the services, as it reaches both the low-end handsets and the high-end ones (including iPhone), with a lot less portability burden.

>>> The Silicon Valley developer community is quickly becoming a center of innovation for mobile.

Dude, NYC is going to kick butt! WE are MUCH more into mobile. We don't even have trees! First shot fired across your bow!

We eat bullets for breakfast here while you guys are figuring out what kind of berries to put on your waffles.

MOBILE NYC iPhone developers INC ROCK! :-)

iFund still needs to harness the potential of the independent developers fully. The mere $100M size seems big for that segment. For example, focus on the Indian iDev community whose investment needs are not that great. You can start with just $1M fund and invest in 100 iDevs for $10K each for 10% stake fixed. That much money will easily keep the dev going for 1 yr. Now iPhone apps are not that much time-consuming to develop, so in 1 yr, a dev could develop 4 apps - total 400 apps. Out of these, there are bound to be some great apps that could reach the top-chart of App Store and return significantly on the total investment.

Nice article.
I have faith that this shift will be a great thing to the independent developer communities and small software companies and mobile start ups...

The revolution it´s on... the migration of "everything you can do on your PC or Mac" to mobile devices is unnstoppable.
